2 Peter 3:14 KJV
[14] “Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.”
Peter is now bringing the believer’s thoughts back down to earth. He uses the word “wherefore,” connecting it directly to the hope described in the previous passage. Hope in the Scriptures is never passive. It always carries with it the idea of strong assurance. We have a hope that is steadfast and sure. We are looking for the blessed hope of our Lord’s return.
These saints were facing difficult times of trials and afflictions. Christian’s were being persecuted for their faith. Peter addresses his readers as “beloved,” which is a reminder that our hope is rooted in our relationship with God the Father. God’s children do not have to live under the condemnation of a lost world, or live in fear of the judgment that is to come. We have a Heavenly Father who watches over us and gives us a hope that goes beyond this world.
He encourages them to “be diligent” in their Christian walk. I believe this is the only way to serve the Lord effectively. Diligence means aligning our lives with what we say we believe. If we truly expect Christ to return, then our priorities should reflect it. Our daily habits should testify that we are looking for Him. This challenge compels us to examine whether or not our daily lives are consistent with our eternal hope. Believers are to live for the Lord with purpose, and that requires us to be persistent in our walk.
Our lives will not be about what we have done but who we have become. Living for God is not about living according to a set of principles, but it is about being seen by God. His eyes are upon us every day. He knows the manner of person we have become. He knows the very thoughts and intents of our heart. If we are going to be found of Him in peace, then we must strive to please Him alone. We must be in harmony with our Heavenly Father. This means that we must seek His will and obey His voice. Our relationship with Him must be marked by trusting that He knows what is best for us.
If we will diligently follow the Lord, then we can live clean lives in this present world. We can live above reproach and keep ourselves without spot in this world. Read your Bible, pray every day, confess your sins daily, and ask for wisdom to know God’s will for your life. Abstain from the appearance of evil, and you will not have to worry about falling into sin. You can live a blameless life that will bring honor and glory to Him. Regardless of the mistakes you might have made, will you commit to this today? Will you practice these things so you can live a victorious life?
