“What Manner of Persons”

2 Peter 3:11 KJV

[11] “Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,”

The Bible teaches that this world is headed for destruction. The phrase “what manner of persons” goes beyond our behavior and involves our identity. It is not just about what we do occasionally, but who we are every day. Peter has painted a very clear picture that the world is coming to an end, so we need to heed this warning. These truths should instill in us the desire to live right.

Consider how loosely the average church member is living today. There is a major problem in American churches with complacency. People who attend our churches are easily offended when asked to live more dedicated and holy lives. Many do not want to be inconvenienced by changing their lifestyle. They do not want to sell out to God and live consecrated lives.

The Lord wants His people to be holy. We are to be dedicated to the cause of Christ and live a life that is pleasing to Him. This requires sacrifice and commitment on our part. Holiness is not about perfection and performance, but about being set apart. Have you set yourself apart for the cause of Christ? Have you allowed His character and truth to shape your life, or do you live selfishly and uncommitted to His will? These are important questions that we must ask ourselves if we are going to live a Christian life.

Holiness is being set apart for God, but godliness is our resemblance to God. If we are living holy lives, we will resemble the Lord in our walk. Think about a dedicated Christian who is set apart for the Lord. You know that they are a holy vessel for God. You also see godliness in their lives. They resemble the Lord in their character and spirit. While holiness is inwardly rooted, godliness is outwardly expressed. Our faith should be obvious in the way we speak, think, and act.

Holiness and godliness are not popular subjects among many so-called believers because human nature leans toward comfort, convenience, and self-interest. These two great qualities require humility, sacrifice, and dependence on God. We must ask ourselves these questions: what manner of person do we desire to be for God? Do we want to be a consecrated Christian, or do we want to serve the Lord only with our lips? Dear reader, ask the Holy Spirit to show you where you are spiritually in your life. Ask Him to help you see who you really are, and ask Him to help you become the manner of person that the Lord desires.
