1 Peter 5:14 KJV
[14] “Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.”
Peter gives us the custom for greeting the brethren in Bible days, especially in that region and the people he was writing to. This custom is still practiced in some countries today. Honestly, I am glad this is not our custom in America. A firm handshake and a friendly smile are adequate.
However, we must consider the principle behind this verse. Peter is encouraging the brethren to greet one another with Christian charity. Our customs may vary around the world, but our charity for one another should be universal. One of the marks of a child of God is their love for the brethren. Jesus said that is how men will know that we are His disciples.
Christian charity is a natural desire among believers. The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost. The problem for some believers is that they allow their feelings to take precedence over Bible principles. I want to address an issue that doesn’t get much attention today, but it certainly needs to be mentioned. It is the issue of not greeting one another with charity.
We should never avoid, snub, ignore, or mistreat another brother when we see them. We should never be guilty of giving another brother or sister the cold shoulder. The Lord wants us to express charity to every brother and not just the ones we are fond of.
Christian charity is imperative because it helps to maintain unity in the house of God. Let me also sound a warning to have discernment toward those who like to spread gossip or cause division. You must practice charity toward them without allowing them to distort your mind toward other believers. Remember that evil communications can corrupt your heart toward other saints. Keep your heart full of love toward the brethren. Practice patience when it is needed and give every member of your church a smile and a friendly handshake. You will live more peacefully by showing charity rather than holding ill feelings or avoiding a brother. Remember that “charity never faileth!”
Your kindness toward another believer may be just what they need. You never know what someone else is going through, so take the time to show charity. Dear reader, charity is a ministry within itself. Be sure you don’t miss an opportunity to encourage the brethren with your love and support.
