“Study Your Bible”

2 Peter 3:2 KJV

[2] “that ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:”

I want to pay tribute to the Bible in this devotional because Peter is pointing believers to it in this verse. In the last devotional, we emphasized the Word of God, and we will do that again for this one. I do not think that you can place too much emphasis on the Bible. God has magnified His Word above His name, so we should magnify the things He does. This is one of the reasons the Devil hates the Word of God.

Think about how much Satan hates God’s Word. The Devil’s actual voice is only mentioned three times in the Bible. The first time is in Genesis when he attacked the Word of God. The second time is in Job when he attacked the saint of God, and the third time is in the Gospels when he attacked the Son of God. The Devil hates the Word of God because it is true, and he is a liar.

God freely gave us His Word so that we could be saved. The Bible is the seedbed of our salvation. It is what produces faith in our lives. The Bible is a faith builder. If you need more faith, just open your Bible and start reading. This is why it is important to begin reading the Bible to your children as they are developing in the womb. Allow them to grow up hearing the Word of God every day, and it will generate faith in their lives.

Peter is telling these believers to be mindful of the Old Testament prophets and the New Testament apostles. The more believers know about the Bible, the more they can live in victory. We should not just read the Word of God; we should also study it. This means we should take a close look at it and examine what God has written. Dear reader, I want to encourage you to pick up a good set of commentaries. Ask your pastor or Sunday School teacher for recommendations. Pay no attention to a teacher or preacher who says he only studies his Bible and does not read other books. If you think about their teaching and preaching, it probably shows. God does not want us to be ignorant.

If we are going to be mindful of what God says, then two things must happen. First, we have to be familiar with what He has written in His Book, which means we have to read the Bible. Secondly, we must have a clear understanding of what is written in His Word, which means we need a good set of commentaries to help teach us verse by verse as we study. These two things will help to increase our growth and knowledge of the Bible!
