Titus 1:2 KJV
[2] “in hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;”
This verse contains one of the strongest assurances in all the Bible. Truthfulness is part of God’s holy nature. Paul does not say God does not lie, but he says He cannot lie. Every word God speaks is perfect and trustworthy. You can depend on His words because they have never failed.
Now think about the first phrase of this verse. God promised us eternal life before the world began. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit knew that once they acted in creation, they would have to act in redemption. Nothing caught them by surprise. The fall of man was not an unforeseen interruption in God’s plan. The Trinity already knew that man would sin. They knew it would require the greatest display of Divine love and grace.
Before there was sin, a Savior was willing to die for man. Before Adam sinned, grace had already been supplied. Before the world began, the Trinity had already determined to redeem fallen man through Jesus Christ.
We know that God’s love is not reactionary, but it is eternal and intentional. The cross was not God scrambling to repair a failed creation. Redemption was part of His eternal purpose from the very beginning. The plan of salvation existed before the problem of sin ever came on the scene.
This also means that God already knew the full cost of redemption before creation began and still chose to create and redeem. Dear reader, if God would make us such a promise knowing the cost fully, then His commitment to His people is unshakable. God does not abandon what He planned from eternity past. Salvation rests in the promise God made before this world ever began.
Because God cannot lie, believers can rest securely in His promises. Many believers live with unnecessary fear and anxiety because they fail to trust God’s Word. Do not allow feelings or circumstances to trouble you about what God has already promised you. When fears arise, remember the fact that God cannot lie. Do not believe the Devil’s lies over the promises of God. Think about the fact that the Devil has never one time told you the truth, and God has never one time lied to you. This should be enough to cause us to rest in His Word.
