2 Peter 2:17 KJV
[17] “These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.”
In Bible times, a well was a source of life, refreshment, and survival. Travelers depended on wells in dry lands to quench their thirst. To come upon a well that promised water, but was empty, would bring frustration and potential danger. Peter reminds us that false teachers and ungodly influences promise spiritual refreshment, but they have nothing to give. They are full of empty promises that leave people deceived and damned for eternity.
We live in a world where many voices are speaking loudly and confidently. They promise peace, fulfillment, and knowledge, yet they are empty of God’s truth. They are like a dry well that looks appealing on the outside but leaves the soul thirsty and weak.
Peter warns us about these ungodly teachers and their false influences. He paints this picture so we will realize that not everything that looks spiritual is from God. Just because someone speaks with passion, charisma, or confidence does not mean they are speaking the truth. As believers, we must evaluate everything in light of the Spirit of God and Scripture. Do not make the mistake of following someone because of their personality or popularity. These false teachers do not bring spiritual growth, but spiritual storms driven by the winds of pride. They are propelled by greed, self-interest, and self-promotion.
There is a judgment awaiting those who deliberately deceive others for their own personal gain. God will punish those who knowingly lead others away from the truth. They are going to face eternal consequences for the wicked seeds that they have sown. Our verse teaches that these false teachers will face eternal darkness. In the Bible, darkness represents separation from God. Our Heavenly Father is all about truth, and He will not allow those who perpetuate lies to go unpunished.
As believers, we should take time every day to thank God for our Bible. We should praise Him for allowing us to have a copy of the Truth. We should read it every day and familiarize ourselves with His Word. We should support the teachers and preachers with our attendance and our amens as they proclaim the truth to us. Truth has fallen in the streets of America. We must spread the truth throughout our communities and neighborhoods. The Bible is like an artesian well that never runs dry. You can open it today, and it will refresh your soul. I encourage you to go deeper in your Bible study and let the Word of God strengthen your walk with Him.
