“As Long As I’m Here”

2 Peter 1:13 KJV

[13] “Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;”

Peter reminds his listeners of the ultimate goal in writing to them. He is not trying to introduce a new doctrine or method but is reminding them of the things they have already been taught. He wants to faithfully pass on the truths that have been given to him and reinforce to these believers what they know to be true.

This is the responsibility of every preacher, teacher, and believer. As men of God, we are to reinforce the truth by preaching it over and over again. May we never be guilty of ignoring a sermon because of the familiarity of the text. Thank God for the faithfulness of preachers who have labored in the Word of God and reinforced doctrine over and over again. We all need to be reminded of what God has written in His Word.

We must also be aware of those who deviate from the Scriptures by creating a new doctrine. Peter said as long as he was in this body, he would continue to remind them of what they had been taught. This is one reason Sunday School is so important. It is where we learn, and it is also where we are reminded of the truths we already know. To be a strong Christian, Sunday School attendance is necessary. If you are a Sunday School teacher, be sure that you take time to study and be prepared for your class. Do not come into class each week and read from a quarterly or a verse of Scripture and ramble aimlessly. No matter the size of your class, your students deserve to hear the Word of God rightly divided. There is nothing more discouraging to a Sunday School class than for a teacher to stand before them unprepared.

As believers, it is our responsibility to share the old story over again with those who have never heard the Gospel. We also need to encourage other believers by reminding them of the truths they have been taught. This should be the goal of every believer as long as we are in this life. We live in a day when everybody is searching for something new and improved, but that is not what we need. The Lord has given us everything that we need in His Word. He makes it clear that nothing is to be added to the Scriptures, and nothing is to be taken away. We need to spend our lives sharing the truths of God’s Word and explaining their meaning. Dear reader, I encourage you to share the Word of God with everyone you meet. Evangelize the lost and encourage other believers in the Word of God.
