2 Peter 2:14 KJV
[14] “having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:”
The warning in this text is not meant to discourage us but to awaken us. God desires stable souls, clean hearts, and faithful lives. The admonishment here is to pursue holiness daily and to help others remain steady in their walk with the Lord. To accomplish this, we must examine our own hearts. We must be careful not to allow small sins to go unchecked. We must guard our eyes, our thoughts, and our desires. It is only through the power of the Holy Spirit that we can resist temptation and overcome Satan.
The warning that Peter gives in this verse is all about the danger of a sinful heart that has become comfortable with wrongdoing. People whose eyes are full of adultery and cannot stop sinning are not just satisfied with their sin, but have a desire to influence others to sin with them. The problem with sin is that it is never isolated. Sinners will always try to entice others to follow their destructive ways. This is why believers must guard their hearts and stay grounded in God’s Word. A stable soul is one who is rooted in truth, prayer, and obedience to Christ. If we practice righteousness, then we grow in holiness. Remember, the daily choices that we make are forming our spiritual condition. If our heart is fixed on Christ, it leads to purity, but if it is fixed on the world, it leads to corruption.
Think about some of the key words mentioned in this verse. Words such as adultery, sin, unstable, covetous, and cursed. These words should capture our attention and cause us to do a personal inventory. I also want you to see that it all begins in this verse with their eyes. We must protect our eyes and ears. The Devil knows that if he can get us to look and listen to things that are unholy, it will get into our hearts. This is why believers must be cautious regarding what they allow themselves to be exposed to. We must keep accountability in our lives and focus on things that draw us closer to the Lord. We must walk circumspectly and cleanse ourselves daily by reading the Word of God. The grace of God is stronger than any habit, and His Spirit can create stability where there was once weakness. Do not allow your heart to go unchecked day after day. The Devil knows that if he can get us to drift from God, then he can get us to sin.
