2 Peter 3:10 KJV
[10] “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.”
A thief does not send notice ahead of time. There is no courtesy warning or calendar appointment. The point is not to inspire fear, but to highlight the certainty of unpredictability. Life, as we experience it, often lulls us into a pattern of assuming that tomorrow will always come. We often think that routines will continue, and that the world will remain as it is. However, this verse serves as a reminder that this assumption is nothing more than an illusion. It reminds us that God’s timing is not subject to human expectation or control.
Our verse proves to us that this world will not be here forever. The world that we live in is far more temporary than we realize. Think about how quickly this world is going to melt and be destroyed in the last days. This verse shifts our thoughts toward eternity. It urges us to consider our relationship with God. Some things will last forever that fire cannot consume. You see, “the day of the Lord” is not only a day of destruction, but it is also a day of revelation. For sinners, this is a day of judgment, accountability, and reckoning. For the saint, this is a day of faithfulness, restoration, and hope. The return of Christ to this earth will surprise the world, as He comes back with His mighty army to set up His Kingdom. He will return as a thief in the night.
I want to encourage you to study the different days in the Bible. We are living in what is called “the day of man,” or “the day of salvation.” Next, there will be “the day of Christ,” which could happen at any moment. This will usher in “the day of Jacob’s troubles,” which will be the Tribulation Period on earth. And that will bring about the “day of the Lord,” which will be the revelation of Jesus Christ found in Revelation chapter nineteen. Christ will return to this earth to rule for one thousand years, and at the end of the millennium, “the day of the Lord” will conclude with a final battle. The millennium will begin and end with two great battles in which the Lord will be victorious. The final day is “the day of God,” which will be the creation of a new heaven and a new earth. Our Savior is going to deliver up the Kingdom to God, and the saved will be with Him throughout eternity. If you are right with God, let it be encouragement, and if you are not, allow it to serve as a warning.
