“A Son in the Faith”

Titus 1:4 KJV

[4] “to Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.”

The phrase “mine own son” means “my true son.” Paul had seen countless souls saved through his ministry, but he referred only to a few men in such personal, affectionate terms. Titus and Timothy held a special place in the apostle’s heart because they were more than ministry companions. These young men had become sons in the faith. There was a deep spiritual bond between Paul and these two preachers.

Titus honored Paul, stood beside him, supported him, and followed his leadership. He was willing to learn from someone who had walked with God through hardships. He watched Paul face persecution and remain faithful to the Lord Jesus. Paul recognized that young Titus possessed a teachable spirit and humility.

Thank God for younger people who still understand the value of supporting the generation before them. This present generation has been taught to resist and question authority. We live in a society that praises young people for thinking independently and making light of past generations. The Lord, however, honors those willing to listen, receive correction, and grow under godly leadership.

Many have become spiritual casualties because of their foolish pride. They feel they can chart their own course without counsel, instruction, or accountability. Often, their own stubbornness and self-confidence lead to spiritual shipwreck. Scripture repeatedly says that we will find safety in wise counsel, and those who reject godly instruction learn life’s lessons the hard way.

Titus was the kind of young man who brought joy and comfort to the Apostle Paul. He was an asset to the ministry, not a burden. Paul could trust him with responsibility because Titus had proven himself faithful.

There is something blessed about a young believer wanting to learn from those who have already fought the battles of life and ministry. Veteran Christians have walked through storms, endured trials, and faced disappointments, but remained faithful to God. Their lives become living testimonies of God’s sustaining grace. Younger believers will do well to sit at their feet and learn. To become a son or daughter in the faith of one of these older saints is a great honor.
