Titus 1:3 KJV
[3] “but hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;”
Preaching is far more than public speaking or motivational instruction. Biblical preaching carries the authority of God’s Word. When a preacher faithfully proclaims the Scriptures, the Holy Spirit can gloriously change lives. The Word of God and the Spirit of God work together as the message is being delivered.
We live in a world where several voices compete for attention. However, none of those voices possess the transforming power of God’s Word. Human opinions may inspire us temporarily, but only God’s truth can change a heart eternally. We must be careful not to elevate the word of man over the Word of God.
Paul understood the sacred responsibility of preaching. He did not preach personal philosophies or opinions. He preached what “thus saith the Lord.” His message was not centered on pleasing people but on faithfully communicating truth. Every generation needs preaching rooted firmly in the Scriptures.
God has manifested many truths to listeners through preaching of the Word. Bible preaching shows men their sinfulness, reveals God’s holiness, brings conviction, explains the way of salvation, and gives hope to those who receive the Word. Preaching helps believers grow in their daily walk with God. Preaching helps us make decisions for everyday living. Preaching will build strong homes and strong churches. A sermon may be simple in style yet powerful in effect because God Himself uses it to touch the listener’s heart.
Throughout history, God has used preaching to bring about great revivals and transform lives. God continues to use faithful preachers to tell the old story of how Jesus saves. Paul was a man committed to preaching the Word of God. I encourage you to look around and consider the preachers that God has placed in your life. Think about where you would be today if you didn’t have men to preach the Word to you.
Paul gives Titus a word of encouragement in this verse because he understood what preachers face. He wants Titus to know that preaching is not a profession but a calling. A man must be true to his calling even when he faces opposition. People need to hear the truth, and preachers must keep on preaching it in these last days. We should pray for God’s men as they labor in the Word. We must pray that the Lord will fill them with His power as they preach His Word.
