2 Peter 3:7 KJV
[7] “but the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.”
It is so easy to become comfortable in this world. We build lives, make plans, pursue goals, and sometimes forget that everything here is temporary. The word “ungodly” in our text refers to a life without God. It speaks of a life that is lived with no regard for Him. An ungodly person may appear moral, respectable, and even religious on the outside. However, they live independently and never allow God into their lives. Ungodliness is not always loud rebellion but can also be quiet neglect.
The word “perdition” means “destruction, ruin, or complete loss.” The problem with those who perished in the flood was not only their actions but their dismissal of what they heard. The world was corrupt, but could have been delivered had they repented. The problem was that they neglected the message and perished, being unprepared for the judgment.
The flood washed away their homes, possessions, families, and any memory of their existence. God totally cleansed the world of filthiness in a matter of days. A single judgment wiped out the entire world except for eight people. The flood showed no favoritism or partiality toward people. God opened the heavens, and His judgment came swiftly upon those who never had time for Him in their lives.
This is exactly what will happen again in the last days. The world has no time for the Creator. Men go about their lives as if there is no eternity and no God to face. Many are vile men who deny God, but some are just too busy to look up and think about Him. They all have ungodliness in common. They ignore His creation, dismiss His warnings, and live as if this world will last forever. Each day brings them closer to God’s impending judgment.
The difference is that God is not going to judge this world next time with a flood. He is going to judge men with fire. The fire of God’s judgment will be just as sure and swift as the flood in the Old Testament. We must do our best to warn the lost. Every day, people wake up and live their final day on earth. They go about their daily routine thinking they will see another sunrise, when in reality, many never see another sunset. They wake up in Hell, never to have another opportunity to be saved. May God help us who are saved to have a burden for those around us who are going to Hell.
