2 Peter 3:4 KJV
[4] “and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.”
The people Peter describes were looking at the world around them and drawing conclusions that nothing had changed. To them, this steady rhythm was proof that God‘s promised intervention was not true. What these scoffers failed to realize was that God does not work on their timeline.
Sometimes, what looks like inactivity is really God’s mercy and patience with mankind. God is not living in time, but rather in eternity. He does not always measure His judgments in short increments. He knows exactly when He will act, and He will not be provoked by man’s inability to see the future. Man can say whatever he will, but God is going to do what He wants to, when He wants to, and how He wants to do it.
You will notice that the question in our text is an attack on God’s promise. These scoffers used their questions as an excuse to dismiss God altogether. Since the Lord had not returned in their time, they felt justified in mocking His promise. God will keep His promise, and all of the ungodly will know that He is God.
We must not allow them to sway us on the promise of His coming. As believers, we must keep looking up! We must live our lives in anticipation of His return. We must remind each other that today could be the day when Jesus comes to catch His bride away. Every day that passes is an opportunity for another sinner to be born again. Each passing day brings believers closer to His return and closer to eternity. We must not lose hope because society does not believe Jesus is coming. The world was wrong when they failed to believe a flood was coming. They were wrong again when they failed to believe the Messiah was coming. So, they will once again be proven wrong when it comes to His return in the Rapture and His revelation to this earth. I will believe the Bible over what the world says! The scoffers have always been wrong, and the Bible has always been right!
Dear reader, do not be discouraged because of the last days. We should be excited to be saved in these times. I know the world is dangerous, but it was worse in the days of Peter and Paul than it is in our day. God has been good to us, and He is soon coming to take us home. I do not know what the future holds for our nation, but I do know that at any moment, the trumpet could sound and we would be gone! No matter what the world says, the King is coming, and He is coming for me!
