2 Peter 1:12 KJV
[12] “Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.”
The word Peter uses for negligent is “ameleo”. It means to be careless or to make light of a certain thing. There are several ways to make light of things, but one is by not emphasizing something very important. Peter is not telling believers things they do not know, but reminding them of the truths that have already been established. Whenever I read this verse, it reminds me of the importance of repetition. Repetition is how we reinforce the truth that we have been taught.
This is why Sunday School is so important in our present day. Sunday School is a time in which we are taught and reminded of the truths that have been established. When the preacher preaches, it is not a new doctrine that has never been heard before, but he preaches the truth that has already been established. The man of God has the responsibility of preaching the truth to those who have never heard it and reminding others of what they already know. I firmly believe that this is one reason many of our young people go astray as they get older. They have heard the truth preached, but it has not been reinforced. Many times, the truth is not taught in their homes. I’m speaking about family altar and prayer time. Perhaps they attend Sunday School where the teacher has not studied and is not well-prepared, so they become bored and uninterested. If they attend a church where the whole counsel of the Word of God is not preached, then they receive no reinforcement of truth. I’m not saying this is the case everywhere, but it does happen in many of our churches. If you attend a church with a good Sunday School program and your pastor preaches the Word of God faithfully, then you should be thankful for that. You should be faithful to your Sunday School class and church services, carrying your Bible and taking notes. Encourage those who faithfully labor in the Word for you. If you have godly parents who have had a family altar in your home, then you should thank them as well. It is a privilege to have been established in the truths of God’s Word. Remember, the Bible says to whom much is given, much is required.
