2 Peter 1:9 KJV
[9] “But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.”
What does it mean to be legally blind? It is a term used to describe a level of vision impairment where a person’s visual acuity or field of vision is significantly reduced, even with corrective lenses. Legal blindness is not total blackness, but extremely poor vision. These people struggle and suffer in other areas of their lives due to their poor eyesight. Being legally blind can cause fear and anxiety.
Peter teaches us in this verse that if we do not add to our faith, then we can become like an individual who is legally blind. This means we are not blind in the sense that we just see blackness, but we cannot see afar off. In other words, we are not in total darkness like a lost man, but we have lost our spiritual eyesight to the point that we have no discernment. We cannot make proper judgments when needed. We are out of touch spiritually with our surroundings. This is where a lot of God‘s children are today. Saved and on their way to heaven, but spiritually malnourished because they are not adding to their faith. Dear reader, if you are lacking these things, then your spiritual eyesight is impaired. Take a moment to review the list that Peter has given us. Take the time to read what each word means and how each one should be implemented in your life.
Do not live your life spiritually handicapped. We must have a sharp eye when it comes to discerning the spirit of truth. We cannot afford to have our judgment blinded by this world. Every decision that we make in life should be spiritually based. This means that God and His will must be considered in every decision. You and I can remove a lot of fear and anxiety in our lives just by adding to our faith.
Finally, those who are blind and cannot see afar off have another problem mentioned in this verse. They begin to doubt their salvation because they have forgotten that they were purged from their old sins. Adding to your faith gives you the assurance of salvation. Some people struggle with their salvation throughout their lives simply because they have neglected the Word of God and have not added to their faith. Reading your Bible daily will give you spiritual knowledge and a deep assurance that you belong to Him.
