2 Peter 1:2 KJV
[2] “grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,”
The verse before us supplies us with two of the greatest resources of the Christian life. Peter mentions grace and peace in the opening of this verse. The child of God must have both of these present every day to serve and live for our Lord faithfully. Why is grace and peace so important? Why do we read of them so often in the greetings of the letters from the apostles? I think that these are legitimate questions for our devotional today.
Grace is God’s provision for every need while living here in enemy territory. All of the infinite resources of the Throne of God are at our disposal to enable us to face every situation and meet every demand made on us. We must have His grace, not just in salvation but also in our daily lives. We cannot survive in this world without the favor of God upon us. The enemy is greater than we are and is always ready to deceive us. The grace of God is at work in our lives in ways that we can and cannot see. Peter reminds these believers of His grace, because it is available and they need to rely on it every day.
Peace is God’s provision for our inner need. Peace means that the war is over and the victory is ours! I understand that we have daily battles, but we need to remember that we are already victorious. When a battle is over and the enemy is defeated, people can live in peace. Dear reader, we are not working for or toward victory, but we are working because we already have it. That means we can now live in peace and serve the Lord every day with complete assurance. Child of God, do not live your life in defeat and doubt. Trust the grace of God and live in peace. Rest in your Savior today, knowing that there is grace for the race and peace for the journey.
This verse also tells us exactly how we can gain these two great virtues as believers. It is through the knowledge of God and our Savior. The reason many live in worry and defeat is that they lack this knowledge. The more you walk with God, the better you know Him, and the better you know Him, the more you live in peace and rely on His grace. Do not live below your privileges as a believer. Read your Bible and talk to God today, and feel at rest in Him. You may know Him in salvation, but do you know Him in fellowship? There is more grace and peace to be discovered by daily dwelling in His presence.
